The
Drapery
glass from which the flowers are made is manufactured by Uroboros
Stained Glass in Portland. It is hand rolled into a sheet at
around 1500 degrees. As it begins to cool, two people manipulate
it with metal pinchers and shake it into folds which gives it the
Drapery look for which it is named. Drapery glass has been hand
made this way for 200 years.
Since the
thickness of the glass can vary from an eighth inch to over an
inch, Drapery glass is the most difficult glass for a stained
glass artist to work with. Because of the intense hands-on work
the glass is expensive but is valued by the artist for its beauty
and for the three dimensional feel it offers to the final product.
